How do I choose the right size pew?

Measure your available wall space carefully, keeping in mind that pews often range from compact single-seater chairs to long benches exceeding several metres in length. Allow adequate clearance for walking past the bench, particularly in narrow hallways. Consider the depth of the seat and the height of the high back relative to your room's proportions and any nearby windows or panelled walls.

Were these pews modified for homes?

Many pews retain their original institutional lengths and configurations as they were removed during church reorganisations. Some pieces, however, have been professionally shortened or adapted to fit domestic proportions by period joiners. Look closely at the ends and back panels to understand whether the length is original to its ecclesiastical past or adjusted for modern interior use.

How do I care for waxed pine pews?

Maintain waxed pine and pitch pine surfaces by applying a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the warm patina. Avoid placing them near direct heat sources or in strong sunlight, which can dry out the timber and cause splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grit from accumulating in the grain and carved recesses.

What is the difference between a pew and a settle?

A church pew is typically an open-backed or panelled bench designed for rows in a communal building, often including a book ledge on the reverse. A settle is a domestic seat featuring solid wooden arms and a high enclosed back intended to block cold draughts by the fireside. While both offer long wooden seating, their original contexts dictate their construction and functional details.
