How should I display antique paper art?

These works require protection from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the paper from yellowing and the pigments from fading. Hanging them on interior walls away from direct heat sources ensures longevity. Using conservation grade framing with UV filtering glass helps shield the delicate watercolours, etchings and silhouettes from environmental degradation over time.

What is the difference between a print and a drawing?

A drawing or painting is a unique, one off creation executed directly by the artist's hand using materials like ink, watercolour or pastel on paper. Each stroke exists in a single, unrepeated form. Prints such as mezzotints, etchings and lithographs are multiple impressions pulled from a prepared plate, stone or block, allowing the publisher to distribute copies while retaining the artist's original composition.

How do I identify the period of a silhouette?

Early examples often feature fine hand painted details, bronzing or delicate cut work mounted on convex glass within slender wooden frames. The costume of the sitter and the style of the signature provide further clues to the decade of creation. Later Victorian interpretations tend to utilise different mounting cards and distinct framing proportions compared to the refined Regency and Georgian pieces.

Why are some watercolours called exhibition size?

Exhibition size watercolours were produced on a significantly larger scale than standard sketches to compete with oil paintings on gallery walls. Artists intended these substantial sheets for public display at annual society exhibitions. Their grander dimensions allowed for complex landscape narratives and detailed domestic scenes that required greater paper stability and robust framing.
