Japanese woodblock printing, known as ukiyo-e, flourished during the Edo and Meiji periods as a primary method for mass-producing artwork and illustrated literature. Originally depicting scenes of urban life, landscapes, and folklore, the technique required collaboration between artist, block cutter, printer, and publisher.
