The Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterised by organic motifs, flowing asymmetrical lines, and inspiration drawn from the natural world.

Maker workshops typically utilised Britannia metal, brass, copper, or pewter as a base, often applying a silver plate finish via electroplating, combined with skilled hand-chasing and repousse work.

Authentic pieces often bear manufacturer stamps, such as maker marks from WMF, alongside characteristic stylised geometric or floral ornamentation unique to the period.

Such decorative metalware works well as a focal point on open shelving, a sideboard, or a coffee table, adding historic texture and sculptural interest to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals to maintain the natural oxidisation and patina.
