Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Handwritten Latin verses in iron-gall ink: typical of scholarly Grand Tour drawings.
Watercolour washes over pencil on wove paper: technique of the mid-nineteenth century.
Traditional Sabine peasant costume with laced sandals: regional attire recorded in nineteenth-century Rome.
Gentle toning across the wove paper: natural ageing over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century framed Italian watercolour artwork depicts a seated farmer holding a sleeping child within a pastoral mountainous landscape. The paper painting employs warm beige, brown, and blue tones, and includes a Latin inscription beneath the scene. A glazed pane protects the artwork, encased within an ornate gilded wood frame displaying layered rectangular mouldings and a bright gold finish. The overall piece measures 65 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in an English country house interior, the artwork brings traditional figurative motifs to domestic spaces. The ready-to-hang piece integrates easily into existing wall displays in living rooms, hallways, or studies. The neutral mount board surrounding the water colour creates a balanced visual boundary between the painted scene and the reflective metallic frame.

FAQs

Genre painting in 19th-century Italy focused on everyday scenes of regional life, capturing local attire, human figures, and rural landscapes popular with Grand Tour travellers.

Watercolour works were executed using water-soluble pigments on paper, framed under glass, and mounted within carved or moulded gilded wood frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit age-appropriate paper oxidation, hand-applied wash techniques, period framing methods, and inscribed Italian titles or signatures at the base.

Framed antique artwork can be styled as a focal point on a gallery wall, positioned above a console or sideboard, or paired with clean-lined contemporary furniture.

Display artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture, ensuring UV-protective glass and acid-free mounting materials are utilised to prevent fading and foxing.
