Description

An early lightly distressed Antique Kuba Kelleh (Kelleh meaning long format) with stunning colours from the mid to late 19th century, the design in the main field is a fascinating array of geometric motifs, a crisply well drawn pattern and on the rarer ivory background and border.  Elegant minor border of vine and leaf design, along with the Kufic larger graphic border.  Early dyes have been used on this wonderful tribal Kelleh carpet.

With the age of this carpet approximately over 150 years old, some low scattered wear and old repairs are visible.  It has a couple of old patches which have been repaired many years ago, but are structurally strong and the colour match is good.  The fringes and sides have been tidied up and it is ready to add an abundance of character to the floor.  Supplied with our underlay this would be secure and durable floor art.

Kuba is a rug producing town located in the north-east of the Caucaus next to the Caspian Sea. The port of Baku in Kuba had its own school for carpet-making.  An amazing and collectable Caucasian rug with great design and a fantastic array of early natural colours.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. FAQs

A Kuba kelleh is a traditional long, narrow carpet originating from the Kuba region in the eastern Caucasus, known for intricate geometric patterns and rich colour palettes.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using handspun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often dyed with natural vegetable and insect-derived colourants.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining knot density, natural dye variations, wool quality, abrash colour shifts, and the specific characteristics of the tribal motifs and borders.

An antique runner adds texture and heritage when styled in hallways, kitchens, or beneath minimalist furniture to create a striking contrast against contemporary finishes.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without suction beater bars, professional hand washing when necessary, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
