This heavy bronze jug dates from the 1800 Classical Revival period and originates from the Grand Tour tradition. The piece exhibits a dark brown finish with oxidised verdigris green highlights across the surface. A sculpted handle depicting Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure, reaches upwards to the rim, where two small hounds rest atop the vessel. The body of the jug displays a gadrooned pattern, while the flared rim is decorated with fluting. Standing at 14 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, the vessel sits upon a circular foot and functions as a decorative object. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Grand Tour inspired a resurgence of interest in classical antiquity, leading metalworkers to create decorative bronzes inspired by ancient Greek and Roman vessels depicting mythological deities such as Dionysus.

These pieces were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting technique, allowing for intricate relief work, gadrooning, and sculptural handles, followed by hand-chasing and chemical or natural patination to achieve surface colouration.

Authentic examples display genuine age-related surface oxidisation, natural wear around the base and handle areas, hand-tooled finishing marks, and cast weight consistent with solid bronze rather than lighter modern alloys.

A patinated bronze jug adds texture and historical interest when displayed on a wooden sideboard top, arranged alongside books on a shelf, or positioned as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, abrasive polishes, or chemical cleaners that could strip the historical patina and verdigris.
