Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early nineteenth century English country chest of drawers displays a bow front and a painted blue finish with visible signs of age and wear. The piece comprises two small top drawers above three graduated long drawers, all fitted with round brass ring pulls and keyhole escutcheons. Fluted corner mouldings run down the sides, framing the drawer stack above a shaped apron supported by short legs. The timber construction stands 105 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. Placed in a bedroom, hallway, or living room, the chest provides practical surface display space alongside everyday storage for clothing or linens.

FAQs

Originating predominantly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, English painted chests of drawers feature traditional joinery combined with surface painted finishes, providing functional storage while incorporating decorative colour into historic interiors.

These chests were typically crafted from solid timbers such as pine, oak, or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass drop or ring handles, and multiple layers of paint or distemper.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural wear patterns on high-touch areas such as drawer edges and handles, genuine hand-cut joinery, historic backboards, and paint finish showing subtle crazing over base timber rather than uniform modern distressing.

A painted chest functions as a focal storage piece in contemporary rooms, pairing naturally with neutral walls, minimalist table lamps, modern artwork, or textured natural fabrics to balance historic texture with clean contemporary lines.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical detergents or abrasive cleaners, protect from direct heat sources, and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent timber movement and paint flaking.
