The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marking an era when Japanese metalworkers combined traditional casting techniques with international influences, producing highly detailed decorative objects and sculptures for both domestic and export markets.

These sculptures are typically produced using the lost-wax casting method, utilising high-copper alloy bronzes often finished with chemical patination to achieve deep brown, black, or red tones.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-chiselled surface detailing, naturalistic anatomical proportions, proper patination consistent with age, and maker signatures or foundry marks either cast directly into the metal or applied via inlaid plaques.

Placing a sculptural metal object on a clean-surface accent furniture piece allows the materials texture and form to serve as a focal point without visual competition from surrounding decor.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth. Chemical polishes, abrasives, and moist environments should be strictly avoided to protect the original patination and prevent metal degradation.
