For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Early 20th century Austrian cold painted bronze inkwell,c1910. Cast in figural form as a Rhinoceros this is a fine and heavy example weighing 1kg. The detail to the body and features is good and the bronze has taken on great colour/patina following many years of handling and use. The base is marked 'Geshutzt' or similar (its a little indistinct) , a mark regularly used on German / Austrian antiques in the early 20th century and meaning 'legally protected/copyrighted'. The hinged lid opens to reveal two openings for the ink. At some point it would have held porcelain or glass inkwells but these are now missing. A lovely decorative piece in good original condition in line with age and use.

This early 20th century Austrian Art Nouveau inkwell takes the naturalistic animal form of a standing rhinoceros, dating from around 1910. Cast in cold-painted bronze, the object displays a dark grey finish with rubbed highlights revealing golden undertones, realistic skin texture across the body, and a hinged lid reservoir forming the back shell. The visual inspection reveals the visible horn on the snout, the textured hide over the flanks, and the distinct separation line of the lid. Measurements are 8.5 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or office desk, this piece serves as a decorative accessory for daily administrative use. The hinged opening back reveals the internal compartment where the original glass or porcelain inserts are now absent, while the heavy cast bronze construction stands steadily on four feet. Surface wear includes rubbed patination across the raised ridges and skin folds from handling over the years.

Cold-painted bronze refers to cast bronze sculptures decorated with layers of unfired enamel or oil paint. Originating in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this technique achieved exceptionally vivid colours and naturalistic finishes on small decorative items and desk accessories.

These inkwells were cast in solid bronze using lost-wax methods before being meticulously hand-painted with specialized cold enamel paints. Functional designs often incorporated hidden hinges seamlessly integrated into the figures anatomical structure to conceal the ink reservoir.

Authentic pieces often feature fine casting details, subtle age-related paint wear showing the underlying bronze patina, and specific foundry marks such as the Bergman B in a pitcher motif or Made in Austria stamps.

Place the inkwell on a dark wood office desk, styled bookshelf, or mantelpiece alongside leather-bound books and brass items to create a refined decorative accent.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean microfiber cloth. Never use water, liquid solvents, or chemical polishes, as these will strip the delicate unfired paint layers from the bronze surface.
