Muriel was born in the Yorkshire Dales in 1910. She won a scholarship to Armstong College of Art: Newcastle when she was only 14. Her work is fluid, emotive and has a spontaneity that is instinctive, responding to the landscape and people around her. Influenced by the dynamic new art of the 1920’s and 30’s she showed a passion for form and colour. She married Fred Lawson in 1933, an artist 22 years her senior, and of a different era, but of the same mind. They were equals, with many like-minded friends. Muriel and Fred lived at Castle Bolton in The Yorkshire Dales all their married life.

This is a watercolour painting on paper titled "Fisherman's Daughter, Scarborough" by Muriel Metcalfe, dating from 1930. Rendered in a Modern British style, the portrait depicts a seated female figure wearing a muted green headpiece and a light-coloured top against an expressive background. The artwork employs fluid brushstrokes and a muted colour wash, signed in the lower corner and presented under glass within a simple wooden frame with a warm gilt finish. The visible materials comprise paper, watercolour pigment, wood, and glass, showing a clean overall presentation ready for display. The piece measures 53 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this framed painting sits comfortably above a sideboard or console table within an English Country House interior. It hangs securely on a wall in a living room, hallway, or study, introducing mid-century character and colour to neutral or traditional decorative schemes. The muted green and grey tones harmonize easily with timber furniture, panelled walls, and soft furnishings. The compact proportions allow it to fit narrow wall spaces or sit alongside complementary artworks in a gallery wall arrangement.

Mid-twentieth-century British watercolour portraiture often features fluid brushwork, muted color palettes, and realistic or figurative representations of everyday subjects, reflecting the movement away from formal studio portraits toward expressive, candid depictions.

Watercolour paintings consist of water-soluble pigments applied to heavy paper stock, often secured behind protective glass within a carved or gilt wooden frame to prevent dust accumulation and moisture damage.

Authentic works are identified through artist signatures, documented provenance, period-correct paper and mounting materials, and natural signs of age such as faint paper toning or historical gallery labels on the backing board.

A framed figural watercolour can be styled above a timber sideboard, placed within a curated gallery wall alongside modern prints, or mounted in a study to add historical depth and tone to contemporary decor.

To preserve watercolour pigment and paper integrity, display the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintain stable ambient humidity levels, and use UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials.
