FAQs

A Russian religious icon is a sacred image painted on a wooden panel, traditionally depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, or saints, serving as an object of veneration in Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Traditional icons were typically crafted using a solid wooden panel, such as linden, pine, or larch, prepared with a gesso ground, and painted using egg tempera mixed with natural pigments and gold leaf.

Authenticity is identified through examination of the wood grain, natural ageing and oxidisation of the varnish, traditional hand-mixed pigments, Cyrillic inscriptions, and structural characteristics like back splines.

An antique icon can be displayed on a dedicated display easel, mounted securely on a neutral wall within a gallery arrangement, or placed on a mantlepiece to add historical depth and contemplative focal points.

Icons require stable environmental conditions with controlled humidity and temperature, protection from direct sunlight, and gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent damage to the delicate tempera surface.
