This Victorian Impressionism oil painting on canvas by Walter Emsley depicts a woodland path motif under dense forest green foliage, showing impasto brushwork, dappled light, and a signature and date. The artwork measures 101 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, operating within an English Country House design vibe. Positioned for placement above the mantel in a home today, the piece captures a sunlit forest path shaded by dense green tree foliage. Walter Emsley painted landscapes in oil and watercolour, living in Manchester and moving to Bushey, Hertfordshire, where an example of his work resides in Bushey Museum and Art Gallery. Other works sit in Gallery Oldham, Glasgow Museums, Salford Art Gallery, and Southampton Art Gallery. Emsley exhibited his work with the RA, RCamA, MAFA, and at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The painting carries the title Leafy June, Bushey, Herts on the back.

Late 19th-century British impressionist landscape painting focuses on capturing natural light, seasonal shifts, and rural environments through painterly brushwork and atmospheric colour palettes, often influenced by open-air plein air techniques.

Artists primarily utilised linseed oil-based paints applied to stretched flax canvas or wood panels, frequently prepared with a gesso ground layer to stabilise the surface before painting.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct canvas weave, age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, historic framing marks, and contemporary signatures or dates corresponding to the late 19th century.

Hang the artwork as a focal point above a mantelpiece, credenza, or console table, pairing it with warm lighting and natural wood tones to complement its earthy colour scheme.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, gently removing dust with a soft brush and consulting a professional conservator for deep cleaning or varnish restoration.
