This mid 20th century oil on canvas on board painting after Giovanni Milone depicts hunting dogs with prey in a woodland setting. The scene shows multiple sporting dogs retrieving a game bird in a clearing amongst trees, executed in a nineteenth-century realism style suited to a Highland hunting lodge aesthetic. The artwork sits behind glass within a decorative wooden frame finished in pale green and gold, detailed with beaded interior mouldings and a heavily carved, fluted outer edge. The overall piece measures 55 cm high by 64 cm wide. Placed above the mantel in a living space or study, it brings traditional sporting character to a room today.

FAQs

19th-century sporting art typically depicts traditional countryside pursuits, including hunting, fishing, equestrian events, and working dogs. These compositions emphasize anatomical accuracy of animals, detailed natural landscapes, and naturalistic lighting.

Traditional oil paintings from this period consist of oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, supported by wooden keys and stretchers, and housed in gilded composition or carved timber frames.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting natural craquelure across the paint layer, age-related darkening or oxidisation of the canvas backing and wooden stretcher, artist signatures, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

A sporting oil painting can be styled by positioning it as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, hanging it over a dark timber sideboard, or incorporating it into a curated gallery wall alongside complementary framed works.

Preserve canvas artwork by displaying it away from direct sunlight, moisture, and fluctuating heat sources. Dust the frame and surface gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and consult a professional restorer for varnish removal or surface cleaning.
