This oil painting on board by Victorian British Impressionist artist William Greaves dates from 1900. Executed in oil paint on canvas, the composition uses a palette of muted green and grey. The artwork depicts a peaceful mill stream framed by tall trees under an overcast grey sky, showing impasto foliage, an overhanging tree, and a reflective stream, with the artist's signature visible in the lower right corner. The piece is housed in a gilt swept frame and includes an original label on the reverse bearing the title, artist's name, and address. The overall dimensions measure 53 cm wide, 42 cm high, and 5 cm deep. Suiting an English Country House design vibe, this artwork is ideal for home placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway. The muted green and grey tones integrate easily into traditional interior schemes alongside antique furnishings, wooden sideboards, or period fireplaces. Hanging this painting introduces a calm pastoral atmosphere to interior spaces, complementing classic wall treatments and traditional picture lighting.

Late 19th-century British landscape oil paintings often feature atmospheric naturalism, muted earthy palettes, and visible brushwork influenced by French Impressionism and plein air techniques.

Artists traditionally applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen or cotton canvas held by timber stretcher bars, often sealed with protective varnish layers.

Authentic pieces display natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate darkening on the reverse of the canvas, period stretcher construction, and hand-applied signatures.

Place the artwork above a wooden sideboard or mantelpiece, using simple modern picture lights to illuminate the texture while contrasting contemporary furnishings with historical art.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
