British watercolour painting developed into a distinct national tradition during the 18th and 19th centuries, prized for its luminosity and ability to capture changing light and atmospheric conditions in landscape and architectural subjects.

Traditional watercolours were created using finely ground pigments bound with water-soluble gum arabic, applied with sable or hog-hair brushes onto handmade rag paper or watercolour boards.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for period watermarks, inspecting the pigments under magnification for age-related oxidisation, verifying signature styles, and checking for period framing and mounting techniques.

Antique watercolours look particularly striking when paired with simple, understated frames that complement the period without overpowering the delicate medium, and hung in areas protected from direct sunlight.

Watercolours must be displayed away from direct ultraviolet light and high humidity to prevent fading and paper degradation, ideally framed using acid-free archival mats and UV-filtering glass.
