FAQs

Naive and vernacular art from this period is characterised by a charming lack of formal academic perspective and proportion, often created by self-taught artists focusing on narrative, symbolism, and local subjects rather than strict classical realism.

These works typically utilised hand-ground oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, housed within handmade wooden frames finished with gesso, paint, or subtle gilding.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition under magnification, and assessing the natural ageing process, crazing, and oxidation of the oil layers.

Pairing historical art with modern minimalist settings creates a striking focal point, allowing the rich textures, dark tones, and narrative depth of the piece to contrast effectively against neutral walls.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity to prevent cracking and fading. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid chemical cleaning agents.
