Classical marble busts originated in ancient Greece and Rome, primarily used to honour civic leaders, philosophers, and deities, later experiencing a major revival during the Neoclassical period of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional sculptures were hand-carved from solid blocks of quarried stone such as Carrara marble or limestone, often utilizing hand chisels, rasps, and drills before being finished with abrasive pumice and water for a smooth texture.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit natural weathering, micro-abrasions, patination consistent with age, and hand-carved chisel marks rather than the uniform machine tooling found in modern reproductions.

Placing a classical sculpture on a minimalist surface, such as a dark timber sideboard or a stone mantelpiece, creates a striking juxtaposition between historical gravitas and contemporary design.

Marble should be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and kept away from acidic substances, harsh chemical cleaners, and direct sunlight to prevent staining and surface degradation.
