This 19th Century Scottish Regency secretaire desk is fashioned from dark amber brown yew wood, burr yew, mahogany banding, and boxwood stringing, accented with bone drawer pulls and brass hardware. The imposing form stands 122 cm high, 112 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, resting upon splay feet united by a serpentine frieze. The piece is arranged with five graduated drawers below a drop-front writing slope that opens to reveal internal compartments, small drawers, pigeon holes, and a central cabinet door with inlaid geometric stringing, all flanked by turned side columns with ebonised capitals and plinths, plus quatrefoil gothic style motifs at the frieze corners. Today, this substantial item serves as a functional workspace in a study, home office, or gentleman's library. The fall-front surface pulls down to provide a dedicated writing area, while the lower chest drawers offer practical storage for household paperwork, stationery, or books. The compact internal drawers feature tiny round white pulls, and the exterior brass key escutcheons and round drawer knobs complete the hardware detailing. It integrates naturally into traditional or period-inspired interiors.

A secretaire, or secretary desk, is a drop-front writing cabinet featuring a hinged fall-front panel that opens to reveal a fitted interior of small drawers and pigeonholes positioned above a chest of drawers.

Traditional pieces often feature native timber such as yew wood, mahogany, or walnut veneers, reinforced with brass hardware, bone or ivory drawer pulls, and oak or pine internal linings.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber surfaces, original cast brass handles, natural grain variations, and operational wear around the fall-front hinges and internal locks.

Position the piece as a focal point in a home office or living room, styled open to display fine stationery accessories, or closed to function as a compact storage unit.

Maintain the polished surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly, and positioning the piece away from direct sunlight or severe humidity changes.
