Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

This 18th century Georgian chest of drawers belongs to the George III period and follows an English Country House design vibe. The piece is constructed from flame mahogany with a warm brown timber finish and is accented by oval brass backplates, brass drop handles, and working brass locks with a key. It has a serpentine front, a moulded edge on the top, four long graduated drawers, a shaped apron, and bracket feet. The chest measures 98 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. This functional storage unit serves well in a bedroom, hallway, or living space to hold folded clothing, linens, or household items while adding traditional character to an interior. The clean flame mahogany surfaces display a polished grain pattern paired with gleaming metal hardware and elegant curved lines along the front and base.

A George III serpentine chest of drawers is an English piece of case furniture made during the reign of King George III (17601820). It is defined by its contoured serpentine front, which curves outward in the centre and inward toward the sides, reflecting the refined cabinetmaking techniques of the late eighteenth century.

Primary woods in high-grade Georgian furniture were predominantly Cuban or West Indian mahogany, often applied as flame or cut veneers to showcase rich grain patterns. Secondary woods inside drawers and backing boards typically included pine, oak, or deal, complemented by cast or stamped brass handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic eighteenth-century chests feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, hand-planed rear panels, and irregular wear patterns consistent with age. Original brass hardware often leaves distinct impression rings or shadow marks on the wood, and drawer bottoms usually show evidence of timber shrinkage along the grain.

A Georgian chest works as a focal point in contemporary halls, living spaces, or bedrooms. Pairing dark mahogany against neutral walls or textured plaster creates visual contrast, while displaying modern art, ceramics, or understated lighting on the top surface bridges historic design with contemporary styling.

To preserve the original finish and patina, apply a thin coat of high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing gently along the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent timber movement, drying, or fading of the veneer.
