Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 16th-century carved wood bust of Saint Jude portrays the apostle with brown hair, a parted beard, and painted facial features including defined eyes and rosy cheeks. The sculpture wears gilded robes decorated with detailed gold leaf patterns and polychrome painted accents in red and black tones. An oval reliquary compartment with a glass viewing window sits centrally upon the chest, framed by metal hardware and small decorative corner elements. Measuring 42 cm high by 30 cm wide, the Renaissance period piece displays visible surface wear, cracking to the painted finish, and areas of missing gilding that reveal the underlying timber. This chest reliquary sculpture serves as an impressive display item for interior placement upon a mantelpiece or shelf within a traditional or gothic-inspired interior setting.

FAQs

Reliquary busts are sculpted human representations created during the Renaissance period to house sacred relics within an integrated cavity or glass aperture, often commissioned for churches and private chapels.

These sculptures were carved from solid timber such as oak, lime, or pine, then coated in gesso before being finished with polychrome paint, tempera, and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate craquelure in the painted surfaces, natural shrinkage splits along the wood grain, hand-chiselled carving marks, and genuine wear to gilded high points.

A carved bust serves as a dramatic focal point when placed on a minimalist sideboard, console table, or within an open bookshelf, contrasting against modern architectural elements.

Keep the sculpture in a climate-controlled room with stable humidity to prevent the timber from warping or splitting, dust gently using a dry soft-bristle brush, and avoid water or liquid cleaning chemicals.
