This seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age framed artwork presents a monochrome portrait of Dudley Carleton, Viscount Dorchester, engraved by Willem Jacobsz. Delff after Michiel van Mierevelt. The composition depicts a nobleman wearing a detailed ruff collar within an oval cartouche surround, accompanied by a Latin inscription beneath the image. Constructed from paper, ink, wood, glass, and gold leaf, the piece displays a black and gold colour scheme. The framing comprises a black wood outer structure, a cream mount, and a gilt inner slip frame. The artwork measures 45 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Positioned within a gentleman's library, the piece hangs suitably above a sideboard or on panelled walls, adding historical context to traditional or transitional interior schemes. The seventeenth-century print reflects diplomatic history and European artistry, offering a refined wall display for study rooms, hallways, or living spaces.

A 17th-century portrait engraving is an intaglio printmaking technique where an image is incised onto a copper plate, inked, and transferred to paper, popular during the Baroque and Dutch Golden Age eras for reproducing portraits of prominent figures.

These prints were created using hand-carved copper plates, oil-based black inks, and handmade rag paper made from cotton or linen fibres, often presented in timber frames.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting plate marks, paper chain lines, watermarks, age-appropriate ink wear, and distinct engraving lines under magnification.

A historical portrait print can be displayed above a sideboard, layered within a gallery wall, or placed alongside contemporary furnishings to create a balanced contrast in modern spaces.

Paper prints should be framed behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials and kept in climate-controlled environments away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
