This sculpture is a classical female portrait bust from 1930 in the Art Nouveau style, created in France. The dark bronze figure depicts a woman with swept-back hair and draped shoulders, signed by the sculptor to the reverse and carrying a foundry mark. The figurine rests on a turned black collar, mounted upon a tall rectangular red and white veined marble pedestal with tiered moulding details. The piece measures 19 cm high. Placed on a mantelpiece, this decorative French Chateau piece adds classic elegance to a living room study or traditional hallway display. The composition brings refined nineteenth-century artistic character to an interior setting, showing the intricate folds of the draped fabric and the polished surface of the red and white marble base.

Art Nouveau bronze sculptures produced in Paris around the turn of the twentieth century are defined by sinuous lines, organic forms, and idealized figures. Sculptors frequently focused on draped drapery, expressive facial expressions, and elaborate hair arrangements, cast in patinated bronze.

These sculptures were typically created using lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details. The finished bronze casts were given specialized chemical patinas and mounted onto carved stone, marble, or onyx pedestals.

Authentic period bronzes usually display clear foundry marks, artist signatures, and natural surface wear consistent with age. Look for crisp hand-chasing on hair and fabric details, along with original patination and appropriately aged stone bases.

A bronze bust serves as a focal point when placed atop a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a curated bookshelf display. Pairing the dark metal and natural marble base with contemporary textures creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the bronze gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush. Apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the patina, and clean the marble base with a damp cloth, avoiding acidic solvents that can etch natural stone.
