Portrait of Queen Anne Reverse Glass Print

18th century
Description

A rare royal portrait of Queen Anne reverse glass print while a princess: Her Royal Highness Princess Ann of Denmark, after Godfrey Kneller and engraved by John Smith.

This beautiful reverse glass print portrays Queen Anne in her court robes before her accession to the throne of Britain. It is after the painting by Godfrey Kneller (1642-1723) who was court painter from the reign of Charles II to George I. Kneller concentrated almost exclusively on portraiture and his work is a Who's Who of the royal court. As well as his royal portraits his most famous work are the portraits of the Kit Kat Club.

John Smith (1652-1743)  was a pioneer of the mezzotint process. Born in Northampton he came to London as an apprentice to Jan Van der Vaart. In 1688 he became chief engraver to Kneller, engraving over a 100 of his portraits.

Presented in a Nineteenth Century Hogarth frame.

This antique reverse glass print is available to view at our London antique shop. We ship worldwide.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Transferred mezzotint plate: typical 18th-century method of reverse glass painting.
Darkened varnish in the inscription panel: natural oxidisation of the adhesive resin.
Lettering naming Godfrey Kneller and engraver John Smith: original late Stuart publication line.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Reverse glass printing involves adhering a paper engraving or mezzotint face-down onto a glass sheet, making the paper translucent, and applying oil paint layers behind the image to create a durable, luminous decorative artwork.

These works feature hand-blown glass plates, black printing ink, oil pigments applied to the back of the glass, and dark stained or ebonised wooden frames.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-blown glass characteristics such as air bubbles or minor surface distortion, age-related pigment shrinkage behind the glass, and period-correct wooden frame construction.

Position the framed portrait above a sideboard or mantelpiece, or integrate it into a gallery wall alongside minimalist black-and-white graphics to create contrast between classical and modern aesthetics.

Dust the exterior frame and glass surface gently using a dry microfibre cloth; liquid spray cleaners must be avoided as moisture seeping behind the glass damages the delicate paint film.
