This Victorian desktop barometer takes the form of an arched, shallow proportioned solid English oak case mounted on a stepped plinth base with scroll carving, a polished brass bezel, and a bevelled glass cover. The warm brown timber exhibits a deep shine and textured relief carving to the lower section, complemented by a silvered dial bearing the maker's inscription Lynch & Bateman Manchester alongside black engraved weather indicators and numerical scales ranging from 28 to 31 inches, with black indicator hands and a central brass adjustment knob. Measuring 20.5 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, the instrument sits well upon a gentleman's library writing table, an executive office desk, or a study bookcase. Functioning as both a practical meteorological instrument and a decorative desktop accessory, this Victorian barometer brings period character to a workspace. Placed upon a mahogany pedestal desk or a walnut partner's table, the piece integrates naturally with traditional leather-bound books, brass desk lamps, and antique inkwells. The compact dimensions allow it to occupy minimal space on a mantelpiece, a writing bureau, or a side table in a study, library, or hallway, providing an authentic historic focal point for daily weather monitoring.

Victorian desktop barometers were developed as domestic scientific instruments during the nineteenth century. As the aneroid mechanism was perfected, compact table top designs allowed homeowners to monitor atmospheric pressure changes directly from desks and mantelpieces.

These instruments were predominantly crafted using native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut casing. The central mechanism was housed behind a glass face with a brass bezel and a silvered metal dial.

Authentic period examples generally display hand-engraved or stamped maker signatures on the silvered dial, precision brass bezels, and detailed joinery or hand-carved mouldings on the timber casing.

Position the instrument on a study desk, library bookshelf, or fireplace mantel alongside brass desk accessories and vintage books to add character and historical detail.

Keep the wood casing away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid turning the rear calibration screw excessively.
