Alfred Edward Chalon Ra, Miniature Portrait

19th century
Description

There’s a captivating softness to this portrait of a young lady with rosebud lips and hazel brown eyes wearing an elegant off-the-shoulder black velvet dress. A red drape in the background adds a pop of colour to contrast with the delicate white mantilla covering her spiralling curls.

In fine condition the portrait resides in a gold-plated frame with an embossed surround, the reverse with a brooch clasp fitting. Soldering marks are visible where the back plate has been affixed.

This nineteenth-century portrait miniature depicts a young lady with hazel brown eyes and rosebud lips, wearing an off-the-shoulder black velvet dress and a delicate white mantilla over her spiralling corkscrew curls. A red drape forms the background behind her, contrasting with the dark tones of her attire. The painted portrait sits beneath glass inside an oval gold-plated metal frame featuring an engraved and embossed surround. Soldering marks remain visible where the back plate joins the mount, and a brooch clasp fitting is attached to the reverse. Measuring 6 cm high by 5 cm wide, the piece offers a compact addition to a traditional interior collection. Alfred Edward Chalon trained at the Royal Academy Schools and enjoyed royal patronage during a successful career in England, creating watercolours and miniatures including an 1837 portrait of Queen Victoria. This Victorian collector's piece is suitable for display on a mantelpiece or within a cabinet setting. The frame exhibits a rich gold colour that complements the dark monochrome hues of the lady's dress and the contrasting red background of the painting.

A portrait miniature is a small-scale watercolour or enamel painting, commonly created between the 16th and 19th centuries as a personal keepsake or item of jewellery.

Miniatures were predominantly executed in watercolour on thin sheets of ivory, vellum, or card, and were encased within copper-gilt frames, gold mounts, or glass covers.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate hair styles, clothing fashions, precise brushwork visible under magnification, and original framing techniques such as engraved gilt metal bezels.

These small artworks can be displayed on mantelpieces, grouped together on gallery walls, or placed inside glass display cabinets alongside other historical decorative objects.

Miniatures must be kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity, as watercolour pigments and organic support materials are sensitive to environmental fluctuations.
