This French Provincial triple door armoire dates from 1920 in the French Chateau style. The piece is constructed from solid oak, which has been hand stripped and bleached to achieve a pale brown, rustic timber finish. The exterior displays detailed floral scroll carvings across the raised fielded panels, complemented by a heavily moulded canopy top and visible brass barrel hinges. The large body is elevated on short cabriole escargot feet. Measuring 200 cm high, 213 cm wide, and 67 cm deep, the armoire provides substantial storage capacity. The interior includes newly fitted brass hanging rails behind the doors. This wardrobe serves as a practical storage unit for a bedroom or dressing room in a contemporary home.

Originating in 16th-century France as heavy wooden cupboards for storing armour and weapons, armoires evolved during the 17th and 18th centuries into ornate, essential storage pieces for clothing and household linens. Regional styles flourished across France, incorporating distinct carving details and architectural mouldings.

French armoires were primarily crafted from dense native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, chestnut, and fruitwood. Traditional construction relied on hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, pegged timber framing, and iron or brass escutcheons and barrel hinges.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, hand-carved decorative motifs, wooden dowel pegs along the joints, and uneven timber shrinkage on the back panels. Original hardware, such as long brass hinge plates and working iron lock mechanisms, also indicates age.

A bleached oak armoire serves as a grounding focal point in master bedrooms, dressing rooms, or wide hallways. Its neutral tone pairs effectively with crisp linen textiles, plaster walls, and contemporary accents to balance traditional carved detailing with modern minimalism.

Preserve the finish by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a clear matte beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber warp or splitting.
