Eutrope Bouret - 19th Century Gilt Bronze of the Goddess Ceres C. 1880

19th century
For Sale by Webberley Antiques (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

A high quality and large 19th century Grand Tour gilt bronze of the Goddess Ceres, holding a sheaf of wheat and with tied sheaf of flowers at her side.

The goddess wearing a laurel leaf and metal head dress, sits on a well shaped decorative plinth, she is draped in fine satin or silk robes tied below her bust and again with a wide ribbon tied below her waist. Her feet bare and her eyes lowered to examine the wheat in her hand.

The plinth stamped Bouret and the whole set on the original black and green solid marble plinth.

In very good condition throughout and with a lovely colour. The marble with a few tiny nibbles to the corners but too small to notice even when running a finger over the surface.

Lovely original gilding and patina with no breaks or repairs to the bronze or to the plinth.

Eutrope Bouret was born in Paris in 1833 to an artistic family. His father fitted bronze mounts and fettled bronze figures. The young Eutrope trained under the well respected sculptor Louis Charles Hippolyte Buhot, sculpting in marble and producing large works in bronze. By 1875 he was exhibiting at the Paris Salon as a highly celebrated and sought after artist. His work is finely detailed and he was known for works which spanned 40 years and which captured romantic and neoclassical subjects as well as his later work in the Art Nouveau period. He produced several sculptures in bronze and marble of the Goddess Ceres.

The bronze is in original condition and has not been restored or polished.

Extremely heavy and high quality, the detailing is exquisite and this is an early bronze with antique gold gilding. The Goddess has a remarkably calming effect.

A very good and early Grand Tour example of Bouret’s work and dating from around 1880.

Dimensions are:

30 cms high, approximately 14 cms wide and 14.5 cms deep. The marble plinth is approximately 3 cms high.

Date of Manufacture

Webberley Antiques has dated this Gilt Bronze Ceres Sculpture to the 19th Century.

This nineteenth-century Grand Tour bronze sculpture depicts the seated Roman goddess Ceres, styled in the neoclassical revival manner. The piece is formed from gilt bronze with a bright gold finish, set upon a square green and black marble base that features polished surfaces and sharp corners. The female figure wears an elaborate headdress and draped robes secured below the bust and waist, holds a sheaf of wheat in one hand, and sits beside a tied bundle of stalks on a decorative plinth. Her bare feet rest on the surface, and her downward gaze focuses upon the agricultural items in her grasp. The entire work measures 30 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 14.5 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece or a display console, the sculpture adds a classical French aesthetic to a traditional drawing room or study interior.

During the nineteenth century, French sculptors and foundries produced high-quality bronze statues featuring classical and mythological subjects, often employing gilt finishes to highlight intricate hand-chased details.

These sculptures are cast in bronze alloy, finished with fire-gilding or electroplated gold, and frequently mounted on solid marble or porphyry bases for stability and contrast.

Authentic period pieces feature precise hand-chiselling, heavy structural weight, incised sculptor or foundry signatures, and natural age-related patination or rubbing to the gilt surface.

Place the sculpture as a focal point on a mantelpiece, console table, or within a library bookcase to provide a sculptural element that contrasts with modern minimalist furniture.

Remove dust using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding liquid polishes, water, or chemical cleaners that can erode the delicate gilt surface.
