Large 19th Century Print After William Powell Frith. 'The Derby Day'

19th century
Description

This famous and striking fine quality print was published on 2nd March 1863 by E Gumbart & Co of 120 Pall Mall, London who was a prominent 19th-Century fine art publishing, print-selling, and dealership firm run by the influential Belgian-born art impresario Ernest Gumbart (1814–1902)

The Derby Day is a large oil painting showing a panoramic view of Epsom Derby, painted by the English artist William Powell Frith over 15 months from 1856 to 1858. It has been described by Christie's as Frith's "undisputed masterpiece" and also "arguably the definitive example of Victorian modern-life genre." Currently exhibited at the Tate Royal in London.

Good condition in a quality frame, it does have an old fold visible when looking close up, when on the wall this is barely visible.

Because of the subject (i.e. Derby Day) and crowds, it creates a tremendous amount of interest because of the number of figures in the print.

Great value at this price, this is not a modern copy.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Clear engraved lines and burin marks: intaglio printing directly from a metal plate.
Engraver credit for Auguste Blanchard: Victorian plate work after Frith.
Publication line lower centre: printed by Gambart in London.
Open outline lettering for the title: an early impression from the plate.
Central vertical crease through the paper: characteristic handling of large Victorian sheets.

This large 19th-century Victorian narrative art print depicts William Powell Frith's panoramic crowd scene of the Epsom Derby, set within a gilded beaded wood frame featuring a title cartouche at the lower edge. Published in March 1863 by E Gumbart and Company of Pall Mall, the monochrome and muted earth-toned artwork displays numerous figures gathered near tents and carriages with an equestrian theme, protected behind glass, and shows an old fold visible upon close inspection while maintaining good overall condition. Measuring 68 cm high by 125 cm wide, the piece hangs ideally in an English country house interior, suited for placement above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or study to provide a detailed historical focal point.

Victorian narrative art typically depicts wide panoramic scenes of contemporary 19th-century British society, capturing diverse social classes gathered at major public spectacles such as racecourses and festivals.

Prints from this period were commonly created using steel engraving, photogravure, or lithographic techniques on woven rag paper, mounted behind protective glass within carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period prints display distinct plate mark indents along the margin, natural paper maturation without modern offset printing dots under magnification, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Position the artwork as a central focal piece above a contemporary or traditional wooden sideboard, balancing modern clean lines with rich historical detail.

Display the framed artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent discolouration, fading, and foxing on the paper substrate.
