This pair of late Victorian oil paintings, dating from circa 1890, depicts pastoral river scenes with livestock figures in a traditional English country house style. Each canvas is set within a decorative gilt wood and plaster frame featuring elaborate gilded mouldings, scrolling relief details, and a heavily ornamented outer border. The colour palette incorporates rich tones of gold, earthy browns, and soft greens, capturing natural light across the water and surrounding trees. The paintings have been recently relined and cleaned, presenting a refreshed surface ready for domestic display. Each piece measures 40 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Suitable for traditional interior settings, this matching pair works well positioned above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table in a dining room, living area, or hallway. The ornate frames bring texture and warmth to neutral walls, while the classic landscape subject matter complements period homes and heritage-inspired spaces alike.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, landscape art emphasised naturalism and pastoral themes, predominantly featuring British rural countryside, waterways, and livestock scenes.

These works were executed using oil-based pigments applied to natural linen or cotton canvas stretched across wooden stretcher bars, typically framed in gilded timber or plaster mouldings.

Authentic period paintings display natural craquelure across the paint surface, darkening or foxing to the canvas reverse, and traditional joinery on the stretcher frame.

Mount them side-by-side above a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to bring historical texture, warm tones, and structural symmetry to a contemporary space.

Dust the frames and surface gently using a dry, soft brush. Avoid liquid cleaners and direct sunlight, and consult a professional restorer for varnish cleaning or canvas tensioning.
