Antique Queen Anne Style Oak Dresser | Cabriole Legs

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Queen Anne style dresser in oak, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and lovely traditional details.

The upper rack has two open shelves with a shaped frieze above, flanked by a pair of cupboards with arched panelled doors and brass escutcheons, each with a small open compartment over. The base has two drawers fitted with pierced brass batwing handles.

The base has a moulded top over a shaped, carved apron, and stands on elegant cabriole front legs ending in pad feet, with square legs to the back. The rack has a moulded cornice and a panelled back.

The oak displays a stunning figured grain with attractive medullary rays, and a deep, rich colour with a lovely patina built up over the years.

The dresser comes apart in two sections, the rack lifting from the base, making delivery and access easier. Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable oak dresser, a perfect addition to any kitchen, dining room or hallway.

This early 20th-century Queen Anne style dresser is made from dark brown oak with a visible figured grain and medullary rays. The piece comprises an upper rack with a panelled back, a shaped frieze, a moulded cornice, two open shelves, and two side cupboards with arched panelled doors and small open compartments above. The base features a moulded top, two drawers fitted with pierced brass batwing handles, a shaped carved apron, cabriole front legs ending in pad feet, and square rear legs. It measures 190.5 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, and separates into two sections for transport. Position this dresser in a kitchen, dining room, or hallway to display tableware or store dining accessories. The traditional design and rich patina suit country house interiors, while the sturdy construction provides practical storage surface space. Use the surface top for serving or displaying items, and utilise the drawers and cupboards to keep dining essentials organised out of sight.

Queen Anne style furniture is defined by refined curves, visual lightness, and understated elegance. Key features include cabriole legs, pad feet, simple drop handles, and decorative arched panel work on cabinet doors.

Traditional dressers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were primarily constructed using solid native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or pine, alongside cast brass hardware for drawer pulls and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and natural variance in timber grain. Cabriole legs ending in shaped pad feet and hand-cast brass handles are also signature indicators of the style.

An oak dresser can be incorporated into contemporary spaces by placing simple ceramic tableware or glass vessel collections on the open shelves to create visual contrast against dark wood. Pairing the piece with neutral wall paint highlights its silhouette without overpowering the room.

Preserve the finish of antique oak by regularly dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and colour fading.
