Dark, layered patina settled into the deeper recesses: steady oxidisation.
Soft wear around the marble plinth.
Finely detailed chasing to the curls and scales: nineteenth-century Continental casting.

This nineteenth-century Grand Tour style bust of Zeus belongs to the Neoclassical movement. The dark brown patinated bronze figure depicts a bearded deity with draped hair and a coiled serpent, mounted upon a rectangular yellow marble plinth base. A visible grain runs through the yellow marble base, and the metal shows a dark finish with metallic highlights on the curls of the beard and hair. Measuring 12 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this sculpture works well on an office desk or within a gentleman's library. The compact object sits directly on surfaces without feet or handles, bringing classical antiquity into modern interiors.

FAQs

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, young European aristocrats undertook the Grand Tour across Continental Europe, frequently purchasing scaled bronze replicas of classical Greek and Roman sculptures as souvenirs of their educational travels.

These objects were typically cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, finished with a patinated surface, and mounted onto decorative marble bases such as Siena, Nero Marquina, or Belgian black marble.

Authentic period pieces display crisp hand-chased details, natural wear to the patina on high-relief areas, substantial cast weight, and original threaded iron mounting pins securing the metal to the marble base.

Small classical busts function effectively as accent pieces arranged on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or stacked atop art books on an office desk to add architectural interest to modern spaces.

Dust bronze surfaces using a soft microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical solvents that strip patination; wipe marble bases clean using a slightly dampened cloth.
