This early 20th century Georgian style chest of drawers is made from mahogany in a dark brown shade with a figured grain and a warm, rich colour. The rectangular top has a crossbanded edge, sitting above four long graduated drawers with flushed fronts and crossbanded drawer dividers. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of round brass lion mask ring pull handles. The case has a moulded plinth supported by shaped bracket feet. Measuring 71 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, this compact piece serves as a bedside chest, or stands neatly in a bedroom, hallway, or living room as an accent chest of drawers. The piece shows minor signs of age and wear commensurate with its vintage condition.

FAQs

Georgian style chests of drawers, originating in 18th-century Britain, are characterised by symmetrical proportions, clean classical lines, and fine wood veneers such as mahogany. They typically feature bracket feet, cockbeaded drawer fronts, and brass ring or swan-neck handles.

Solid mahogany or pine carcasses lined with oak or pine drawer linings were standard during the Georgian era. Hardware typically comprised cast brass backplates and drop handles or ring pulls, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints.

Look for hand-sawn dovetail joints with uneven spacing, hand-planed drawer bottoms with timber shrinkage, original brass lock plates, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside. The presence of wood-grain matching across drawer fronts is also a sign of quality cabinetmaking.

A compact mahogany chest functions as a bedside cabinet in a bedroom or as an accent side table in a living space. Pairing dark mahogany timber with neutral walls, modern table lamps, or contemporary ceramics creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments to prevent wood warping or finish deterioration.
