Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian brass sander from 1800 serves as a practical desk accessory for a gentleman's library or office desk. The small cylindrical body displays a warm gold colour with visible signs of age including minor damage to the lid. Turned incised concentric lines circle the body and the flared pedestal base, while a looped side strap handle projects from the upper section. The rounded top forms a perforated domed lid pierced with numerous small circular holes arranged in curved patterns. Measuring approximately 10 cm in height, the object is compact enough for everyday use on a writing desk. Placed in a home today, it functions well as a decorative desk tidy or pen wipe holder alongside other vintage stationery items in a study or library.

FAQs

Prior to the widespread adoption of blotting paper in the nineteenth century, ink sanders (or pounce pots) were used to hold fine sand or powdered gum sandarac. Writers sprinkled the material through the perforated lid onto wet ink or vellum to speed up drying and smooth writing surfaces.

These desk items were commonly constructed from cast or sheet brass, pewter, turned wood, and leaded glass. Higher-end versions from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were occasionally crafted from silver or decorated porcelain.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-punched perforations, irregular seam joins from early brazing techniques, turned body lines, and uneven wear or oxidation consistent with age and hand handling.

Small brass desk accessories can be arranged on study shelving, styled atop a stack of hardback books, or paired with contemporary stationery items on an office desk to add historical texture.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip natural age-related patina. If polishing is desired, use a dedicated metal polish sparingly, taking care around punched holes where residue can collect.
