Antique George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers C.1790

18th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany chest of drawers, the solid mahogany top with moulded edge above four long graduated drawers retaining a warm, even colour and fitted with brass swan-neck handles, all raised on bracket feet.

A practical, understated and compact chest with a classic Georgian silhouette and a conveniently modest footprint. Its shallow depth lends itself to a chimney-breast alcove, entrance hall or landing.

Very good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age, later brass handles, original backboards traditionally reinforced and a solid historic grain-line repair to one drawer front. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

This George III chest of drawers belongs to the Georgian period and uses solid mahogany with a warm brown colour and an even finish. The compact English country house piece shows a moulded edge on the top above four long graduated drawers fitted with later brass swan-neck handles, brass keyhole escutcheons, and shaped bracket feet, alongside light surface wear consistent with age, original backboards traditionally reinforced, and a solid historic grain-line repair to one drawer front. Measuring 85.5 cm high, 90.5 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, the chest has a shallow depth that lends itself well to a chimney-breast alcove, entrance hall, or landing in a home today.

A George III chest of drawers dates from the reign of King George III (17601820). Pieces from this period are characterized by balanced classical proportions, constructed predominantly from mahogany or oak, and typically feature graduated drawers with brass swan-neck or oval plate handles resting on bracket feet.

Primary woods were typically Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for dense grain and rich colour. Secondary woods used for drawer linings and internal framing included pine, oak, or deal, assembled using hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn wood marks, hand-cut uneven dovetail joints, and pine or oak drawer bottoms with grain running horizontally or vertically depending on the period. Original period iron locks, brass escutcheons, and natural wear to the base of the drawer runners are key markers.

A Georgian chest functions well as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom, or living area. Modern styling often pairs the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork hung directly above, minimalist ceramics, or modern table lamps to contrast modern and historical design elements.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber patination. Avoid placement directly adjacent to heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish bleaching.
