J. J. Bétourné (1919–2008)
J. J.
Working throughout the twentieth century, he established a respected workshop in Limoges and became recognised for finely executed enamel paintings on copper, including floral subjects, landscapes and decorative panels.

Beyond his own artistic production, Bétourné played an important role in preserving and teaching the traditional techniques of Limoges enamelling. His atelier trained and influenced a number of later enamel artists, including Jean Zamora and the Carmona brothers, helping to continue one of France's most important decorative arts traditions.

Although best known today for his enamel work, this drawing, dated 1936, appears to represent an early academic study from the beginning of his artistic career, demonstrating the accomplished draughtsmanship and tonal control that later characterised his work as a Limoges enameller.

Architectural Capital Study
Original Pencil & Charcoal Drawing on Paper
Dated 1936
An original pencil and charcoal drawing by the French artist and Limoges enameller J. J. Bétourné, depicting an intricately carved Romanesque or Gothic architectural capital.

Executed in 1936, the drawing displays confident academic draughtsmanship with beautifully observed tonal modelling and subtle transitions between light and shadow. The sculptural ornament is rendered with precision, revealing the artist's strong understanding of architectural form and classical design.

The work bears the artist's signature together with a 1936 inscription to the reverse and retains an indistinct workshop or collection stamp to the upper corner. It appears to date from the artist's formative years before establishing his reputation as one of the respected enamel artists working in Limoges.
Today Bétourné's enamel works remain sought after by collectors of twentieth-century French decorative arts, while original drawings from this early period appear considerably less frequently on the market.
