This late 19th-century Victorian sculpture is carved from cream-coloured alabaster and depicts a sleeping child seated on a bench with draped clothing and bare feet. The child rests their head on an arm supported by a book labelled with letters, while the bench backrest features an engraved relief scene of a religious figure surrounded by trees and a signature on the back of the base by the Italian sculptor P E Fiaschi. The stone shows natural tonal variations and veining throughout the smooth surfaces, along with minor losses typical of age. Measuring 39.5 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, the figure is sized for display on a mantelpiece, side table, or within a dedicated display cabinet in a living room, study, or hallway interior.

During the late nineteenth century, Italian workshops, particularly in Florence and Volterra, specialized in carving fine alabaster figures for the European export market. Master sculptors created romantic, classical, and genre scenes, capturing soft anatomical details and draped fabrics in translucent stone.

Alabaster is a fine-grained form of gypsum or calcite stone, softer and more workable than marble. Artisans carved the stone using hand chisels, rasps, and fine abrasives before polishing the surface to highlight its natural translucency and subtle veining.

Authentic period pieces display crisp hand-carved detail, subtle variation in stone translucency, and incised signatures or workshop marks near the base. Natural age-related patination, micro-scratching on the base, and soft translucency distinguish genuine alabaster from later resin cast reproductions.

An alabaster sculpture functions well as a focal accent on a dark wood mantelpiece, a marble console table, or nestled within a styled bookcase. Highlighting the piece with soft ambient lighting brings out the stones natural depth and translucent quality.

Alabaster is a porous, water-soluble material that should never be washed with water or liquid cleaners. Dusting with a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster maintains the surface, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and humidity prevents discoloration.
