This large early 20th century Chinese sculpture takes the form of a seated monkey in a Chinese Republic style. Modelled in warm brown wood with a light tone, it shows deep grooving across the entire body to mimic fur, along with dark inlaid eyes painted black and chiselled details around the face. Traces of a Chinese stamp appear to the underside. The figure sits with its arms resting on its knees in an attentive posture, measuring 39.5 cm high, 25 cm wide and 22 cm deep. Placed on a bookshelf or within a gentleman's library, this decorative object brings character to an interior. The sculpture stands independently on a flat surface, catching the light across its polished wooden grain and the textured carvings of its limbs.

During the late Qing Dynasty and Republic period in China, artisan woodcarvers produced figurative sculptures representing animals, deities, and folklore characters for both domestic decoration and export trade.

Craftsmen typically utilized indigenous dense hardwoods or softwoods such as boxwood, camphor, or pine, which were carved using handheld chisels and finished with natural wax or varnish.

Authentic period examples demonstrate uneven hand-tool marks, natural shrinkage lines along the wood grain, and realistic wear or wax build-up in recessed areas.

Position the sculpture on a bookshelf, desk, or sideboard to serve as a tactile decorative accent that introduces organic warmth and character to neutral spaces.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent splitting, dust regularly with a soft dry brush, and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally.
