Description

‘Pass-Room Bridewell’ By Rowlandson & Pugin - Ackermann Microcosm of London - 1808 hand-coloured aquatint

A genuine, original Georgian hand-coloured aquatint engraving titled "Pass-Room Bridewell", published in London on March 1, 1808, by Rudolph Ackermann at The Repository of Arts, 101 Strand.

This poignant print is Plate Number 12 from the legendary landmark publication The Microcosm of London. It presents a fascinating and rare social record of the interior of Bridewell Prison's holding ward, where destitute women and vagrants awaited relocation to their home parishes.

The composition is a premier masterwork collaboration: dramatic institutional perspective and lighting by Augustus Pugin juxtaposed with highly sensitive and expressive human figure studies by the renowned social satirist Thomas Rowlandson. The plate boasts superb aquatint work by John Hill, elegantly elevated by original, hand-applied watercolour washes.

The scene details a stark, high-ceilinged room illuminated by strong shafts of light pouring through barred windows, highlighting the straw-lined beds and the interactions of the mothers and inmates. The print has been neatly hinge-mounted inside a premium contemporary white display mat board and is entirely ready for framing. A magnificent and rare historical document for collectors of social history, early penal reform, and rare Londoniana.

This genuine Georgian hand-coloured aquatint print, titled 'Pass-Room Bridewell', dates from the Regency period in 1800 and originates from London. Created by the notable collaborators Thomas Rowlandson and Augustus Pugin, with aquatint engraving by John Hill and publication by Rudolph Ackermann, the artwork is executed in ink and watercolour on heavy period woven rag paper in sepia brown and cream tones with hand-applied colour washes. The scene presents an architectural perspective of a high-ceilinged institutional room with barred windows, straw-lined beds, and a figure group composition depicting women and children, set within a crisp white display mat board. The overall piece measures 33.5 cm high and 39.5 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this historical artwork suits placement on a narrow wall space, typically hung in a gentleman's library, study, or hallway. The print is ready for framing to bring a classic institutional interior study into a domestic setting.

An aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries that allows artists to create subtle tonal variations alongside line work. Copper plates were etched using powdered rosin and acid, producing prints that mirrored the effect of watercolour washes.

Plates were etched by printmakers to create the primary monochrome base tones before being printed onto rag paper. Teams of colourists then applied watercolour washes by hand, following a master proof to ensure consistent colour application across publication runs.

Authentic prints feature publication lines at the lower margin specifying Rudolph Ackermann at the Repository of Arts, along with plate numbers at the upper right. Original plates were etched on heavy laid or woven paper, typically bearing signatures for Thomas Rowlandson and Augustus Pugin.

Historical works on paper are commonly mounted in modern minimalist frames or traditional wooden mouldings. Arranged individually in narrow spaces or grouped as part of a gallery wall, they add historical context and tone to study areas and hallways.

Prints should be mounted using acid-free board and UV-filtering glass to protect against foxing and light degradation. Display areas must be kept at stable humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
