Pair Antique Chinese Export Bronze Champleve Enamel Greco Roman Cachepots C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A distinctive matched pair of antique Chinese export bronze and enamel cachepots / jardinières, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, probably circa 1900–1930.

Of rounded ovoid form, each vessel stands upon a spreading pedestal foot and has a broad flared rim. The bodies are richly decorated with geometric diaper bands surrounding a striking central frieze of turquoise enamel brickwork populated by European / Greco-Roman style figures.

The narrative scenes include helmeted warriors, attendants, horses and processional figures, creating an unusual combination of East Asian metalwork and Western classical subject matter typical of decorative wares produced for the export market.

The coloured decoration appears to be executed in champlevé-style enamel, with turquoise, blue, cream, yellow and reddish-brown enamels contained within recessed areas of the bronze / copper-alloy surface. The surrounding geometric bands are worked directly into the metal and include repeating hexagonal and tortoiseshell-style motifs.

The unusual European figural decoration gives this matched pair considerably more character than the more commonly encountered floral examples of East Asian export enamel work.

The interiors retain extensive darkened patination, oxidation and historic residue consistent with age and use.

Origin: China / East Asian export market

Period: Late 19th to early 20th century

Date: Circa 1900–1930

Material: Bronze / copper alloy with champlevé-style enamel decoration

Type: Pair of cachepots / jardinières

Decoration: European / Greco-Roman style warriors, attendants and horses

Height: Approx. 18cm each

Condition: Honest antique condition overall with age-related surface wear, rubbing, scratches, oxidation and areas of enamel loss. Both vessels show later soldered reinforcement around the internal base plates, particularly visible on one example. Further minor losses and wear are present to the enamelled decoration. The black “HRH 5556” inscription to the underside is a later stock or inventory number rather than a maker’s mark. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

An attractive and unusual matched pair of early-20th-century Chinese export bronze and enamel cachepots, particularly notable for their turquoise ground and uncommon European classical figural decoration.

This matched pair of Chinese export cachepots dates to the period around 1920 and follows a Chinese export style. The vessels are cast from dark bronze with a copper-alloy finish and feature wide bands of turquoise champlevé enamel depicting Greco-Roman style figures, warriors, and horses against brickwork patterns. Each round ovoid body has a broad flared rim, an incised geometric pattern around the upper shoulder, and stands on a spreading pedestal foot, with a dark patina and signs of historic oxidation visible across the metal surfaces. Measuring 18 cm high each, the pair sits well on a sideboard top or desk in a gentleman's library, study, or living room to hold small plants, foliage, or decorative items.

Chinese export champleve enamel refers to decorative metalwork produced in China primarily for Western markets, where recessed cells are carved or cast into bronze or copper bases and filled with vitreous enamel paste before firing and polishing.

These vessels were typically cast in heavy bronze or brass, with decorative relief work around the body. The champleve process involved filling carved recessed areas with coloured enamel glass powder, firing at high temperatures, and grinding the surface smooth.

Authentic pieces generally display heavy cast metal construction, age-consistent patination on untreated bronze areas, hand-applied enamel with slight surface irregularities, and occasionally cast or stamped maker marks on the base.

Pair bronze cachepots on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to create symmetry. They serve as functional planters for indoor foliage or stand alone as decorative classical accents in traditional and eclectic settings.

Dust surfaces gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can damage enamel or strip natural patina. Keep the interior dry or use a plastic liner if placing live plants inside.
