Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Nouveau calling card tray originates from around 1900 and functions as a decorative accessory for a sideboard top. The piece takes an elongated, oval form measuring 245 x 130mm, rendered in silvered pewter and Britannia metal with a polished silver-coloured finish. At one end, a cast maiden figure leans over a lily pad detail, while a coiled serpent with detailed scales and head curves along the opposite end amidst organic floral motifs and sinuous lines. The casting shows crisp definition to the figure, foliage and snake, with smooth recessed surfaces in the tray basin and light surface marks indicative of period age. In a modern interior, this card tray serves as a functional decorative receptacle for small items such as keys, cards or trinkets in an entrance hall or living space. The sculptural design combines figurative and naturalistic elements typical of the period, presenting an organic composition that integrates the female figure and the serpent into the rim and base structure. The metal surface reflects ambient light, highlighting the relief details of the leaves, flowers and animal forms across the length of the tray.

FAQs

Popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, calling card trays were placed in entrance halls to receive visiting cards from guests, frequently featuring organic, sinuous motifs characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement.

WMF predominantly used electroplated Britannia metal, a pewter alloy, often finished with silver plating or polished surfaces to achieve intricate cast details and fluid forms.

Authentic WMF items usually feature stamped maker marks on the underside, such as the ostrich mark, WMF, or letter codes indicating the base metal and plating style, accompanied by sharp casting definition.

An antique metal tray functions effectively as a vide-poche on a hall console table, a jewellery dish on a dressing table, or an accent piece on a desk or bookshelf.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads which can strip electroplated finishes and remove original patination.
