Early 20th Century Solid Honey Oak Dresser

1900 - 1920
Sold 7 October 2026 · Steven Swann Antiques
This “Early 20th Century Solid Honey Oak Dresser” found a buyer.

It was listed by Steven Swann Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An early 20th-century solid honey oak dresser, inlaid with a checkerboard pattern throughout. The lower section has six drawers, while the upper section has two plate-rack shelves and two small cupboards.

Well suited to either a kitchen or dining room setting.

Condition Report

In good, solid condition. During photography I noticed a very slight lean backwards, although this is not noticeable in use and has not presented an issue when the dresser has been moved.

There are splits to each side of the lower section, along with a minor split to the top, caused by natural movement and shrinkage of the timber since manufacture. There are also two small holes to the backboard of the upper section, as shown in the photographs.

Otherwise, good, clean and usable antique condition.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

This early 20th-century English country kitchen dresser is rendered in solid honey oak with a warm brown finish and a checkerboard pattern inlay throughout. The upper section contains two open plate-rack shelves flanked by two small panelled cupboard doors with brass handles, sitting atop a base unit fitted with six drawers furnished with brass swan-neck handles and bracket feet. The wood displays natural signs of age and movement, including splits to each side of the lower section, a minor split to the top, and two small holes on the upper backboard, alongside a slight backward lean. Measuring 193 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, this practical piece provides ample storage and display space. Suitable for daily use in a traditional kitchen or dining room setting, the storage unit easily accommodates tableware, kitchenware, or decorative items. The upper open shelves allow for accessible plate display, while the enclosed cupboards and six lower drawers keep dining essentials neatly organised out of sight. The solid oak construction ensures durability for everyday household routines, bringing timeless utility and traditional character to domestic interiors.

A traditional Welsh dresser is a functional piece of storage furniture comprising a large base with drawers or cupboards, topped by an open shelving unit originally intended to display ceramics and tableware.

Early 20th-century dressers were predominantly constructed using solid native hardwoods such as oak, pine, and mahogany, often featuring solid brass handles and hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces typically showcase hand-crafted drawer construction, uneven back panels, natural wood grain variation, and genuine wear around original cast brass hardware and keyholes.

An antique oak dresser can be integrated into contemporary spaces by styling the open shelves with modern ceramic tableware, minimalist glassware, or framed art to balance the dark wood tones.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timbers natural finish and protect it from drying out.
