Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request.

Condition: Painting appears in generally good vintage condition with age-related surface characteristics. Frame has light marks and wear consistent with age. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.

This early 20th-century Scottish School oil painting on a wood panel depicts a Highland landscape by artist Tom Campbell. Executed in the traditional style, the composition portrays a rocky stream winding through open moorland with grazing sheep in the foreground and a mountainous backdrop beneath a pale sky. The palette consists of earthy ochre and green tones, accented by grey rocks, brown hills, and silvery birch trees with exposed white bark along the right bank. The surface displays visible vigorous brushwork through the foliage, water, and rocks, alongside a legible artist signature in the lower right corner, while the wooden panel measures 38 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It suits placement above the mantel in a Highland hunting lodge interior or traditional living room setting.

Scottish landscape painting of this period frequently focused on naturalistic depictions of regional scenery, incorporating muted lighting, pastoral wildlife, and atmospheric weather conditions executed in oil on panel or canvas.

Artists employed seasoned hardwood panels such as oak, mahogany, or pine coated with gesso ground, applying oil-based pigments mixed with linseed oil and finished with protective varnish.

Authentic period works typically display natural age craquelure, period-appropriate timber aging or oxidation on the reverse panel, original artist signatures, and consistent brushwork technique.

A pastoral landscape can be styled above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall, pairing effectively with natural timber furniture, dark leather, and brushed brass accenting.

Maintain the artwork in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, removing dust gently with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.
