Provenance: These drawings were removed from a scrap album which had been compiled by Smetham's daughter Edie and her siblings. Throughout his life Smetham suffered from bouts of mental illness but it was in the fall of 1877 that he succumbed to a debilitating attack, he became delusional and virtually ceased talking. Almost a year had passed since his attack when the album was gifted to him by his children. After a decade of emotional and psychological anguish, he died on February 5, 1889. The album was inscribed on the frontispiece; Scraps from Sketch Books – Jas. Smetham.

We are currently holding a sale of our collection, the prices range from as little as £28 to £185. You can view them from the menu bar on our home page - @ Radnorshire Fine Arts - James Smetham “SALE”

James Smetham (1821-1889) produced over four hundred paintings during his lifetime. Like his good friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who was a major influence on his art, Smetham was a poet as well as a painter. He also wrote criticisms and recorded fascinating details on many celebrated personages of his day. His paintings ranged from portraits to Biblical interpretations, arcadian vignettes and landscapes. Smetham had great hopes and complicated theories about how audiences would understand and buy his art, but he was sadly disappointed with critical response. However, he received praise from some eminent contemporaries like John Ruskin, George Frederick Watts and Dante Gabriel Rossetti who hailed his friends’ paintings as “the flower of modern art”.

This collection of works on paper comprises four 19th-century Victorian pencil and watercolour marine sketches by James Smetham, mounted on a blue Ingres laid backing paper and presented within a clear archival acid-free polyester sleeve. The upper watercolour depicts coastal figures in shades of blue, red, and green on white wove paper, while the central horizontal piece shows sailing vessels and a horizon line in graphite on buff wove paper. Two smaller works at the bottom illustrate rowing boats in graphite and watercolour washes. The backing paper measures 27 x 21 cm, the top drawing measures 6.4 x 7.7 cm, the middle drawing measures 3.9 x 12.1 cm, and the bottom left drawing measures 3.9 x 3.6 cm. These delicate works suit display on a narrow wall space in a study, library, or hallway of a coastal retreat. The arrangement preserves historical context from the artist's family scrap album, originating from sketchbooks compiled by Smetham's children. The paper media exhibits visible graphite lines, subtle watercolour bleeding, and tonal variations across white and buff papers, housed securely for preservation.

Victorian marine sketches often depict coastal life, fishing vessels, and harbour scenes captured in pencil, ink, or watercolour wash. Artists such as James Smetham created observational field studies to record natural light, maritime equipment, and figure compositions directly from nature.

Artists during this period typically executed studies on rag paper or woven paper using graphite pencil, iron gall ink, and watercolour washes composed of natural pigments bound with gum arabic.

Authentic 19th-century works exhibit natural paper ageing, such as uniform toning or foxing, along with period-correct graphite and watercolour pigments. Inscriptions, mount styles, and historical collection marks further confirm authenticity.

Displaying small works on paper within conservation-grade mounts and simple timber frames allows them to complement contemporary gallery walls, quiet study areas, or coastal-themed interiors.

Works on paper must be kept out of direct sunlight and held in low-humidity environments to prevent pigment fading and mould growth. Frame them using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting boards.
