Description

Franz Xavier Bergman Austrian Cold-Painted Bronze Arab Camel Rider Sculpture

Brief Description:

This is a superb and highly decorative Franz Xavier Bergman Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture, depicting an Arab Bedouin warrior seated upon a camel.

A wonderfully evocative Orientalist composition, the figure is portrayed wearing traditional flowing robes and a headdress, holding a long rifle across his body whilst raising one hand to shield his eyes as he surveys the distant horizon.

The bronze displays fabulous attention to detail throughout, particularly to the camel's wonderfully modelled features, harness and reins, together with the intricate folds of the rider's robes and his beautifully detailed rifle.

The surviving cold-painted and gilt decoration gives the piece enormous character, with rich golden tones contrasting beautifully against the darker patinated bronze.

Works of this nature became particularly fashionable during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Franz Xavier Bergman (1861–1936) becoming internationally renowned for producing some of the finest and most desirable Austrian Orientalist bronzes of the period.

The subject matter is quintessentially Bergman, capturing the fascination with North Africa and the Middle East that inspired many of the celebrated Viennese bronze foundries.

A magnificent and extremely decorative collector's piece that displays beautifully from every angle.

It is also signed by the Bergman factory - see images.

Perfect for an antique desk, library, study, gentleman's office or as a statement piece within a fine collection of Orientalist works of art.

Cold-painted bronze refers to cast bronze figures coloured with layers of unfired paint or enamel, a decorative technique popularised in Vienna during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These figures were cast using traditional lost-wax methods before multi-coloured enamel or oil-based pigments were applied cold to the metal surface to highlight intricate details.

Authentic pieces often feature foundry marks or signatures, such as a capital B inside an urn for Franz Bergman, alongside sharp casting details and natural surface wear to the paint.

These detailed figures work well as accent pieces positioned on library shelving, mantelpieces, or executive writing desks within traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishing cloths that can lift the delicate cold-painted finish.
