Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Wide vertical pine backboards: hand-worked secondary timber typical of 18th-century joinery.
Thick hand-cut walnut veneers: early sawing methods before modern machine slicing.
Cast brass rococo handles: period casting with natural handling wear on the grip.
Shrinkage gap between the backboards: natural timber movement over two centuries.
Cross-grained walnut moulding around the top: classic continental cabinet-making practice.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This small Swedish Rococo chest of drawers from the eighteenth century is made from walnut with pine, birch, and brass, rendered in a warm brown colour with distinctive figuring across the timber surfaces. The piece features a bow front with two deep drawers fitted with ornamental brass handles, pierced brass escutcheons, and a working key for the top drawer only, all supported by curved cabriole legs and a shaped apron at the base. Measuring 85.5 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep, this commode functions practically as a bedside table or a compact storage unit in a bedroom, hallway, or living space today. The drawers run smoothly and the entire piece arrives ready for domestic use.

During the 18th century, Swedish cabinetmakers adapted European Rococo and neoclassical styles, creating streamlined pieces with elegant curves, balanced proportions, and functional craftsmanship suited to Nordic interiors.

Craftsmen typically utilised local softwoods such as pine for the internal frame, veneered with native hardwoods like birch or fruitwood, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joinery and hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks on back panels, irregular hand-cut dovetails, historic oxidisation around drawer linings, and original cast brass handles with age-consistent wear.

A small two-drawer commode functions effectively as a bedside table, hallway accent, or living room side cabinet, introducing natural timber warmth and historical texture into contemporary spaces.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth, applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually, and positioning the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage or veneer movement.
