This large late 18th or early 19th-century earthenware slipware jug exemplifies rustic country style. The vessel combines a dark brown glazed upper body with a textured terracotta lower base, finished with a two-tone glaze, a single side handle, a flared neck rim, and a ribbed terracotta base. Physical details include a chip on the inner rim, a hairline crack to the base, and general age-related wear and tear. Measuring 33.5 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the piece functions well in a kitchen setting on a kitchen island. It serves as a decorative focal point for holding floral arrangements or displaying standalone character in a traditional interior.

FAQs

Slipware is earthenware decorated with liquid clay, known as slip, before firing, widely produced throughout Britain from the 17th to the 19th century for utilitarian household objects.

These vessels were typically crafted from local red or buff earthenware clay, partially coated in a lead or manganese glaze, leaving the lower base section unglazed and exposed.

Authentic historical pieces exhibit hand-thrown irregularities, natural wear along the unglazed base, age-related crazing in the glaze, and an absence of modern factory stamps.

It functions effectively as a decorative mantelpiece focal point, a dining table centrepiece filled with seasonal foliage, or displayed alongside traditional ceramics on open kitchen shelving.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged submersion or chemical cleaners that could compromise historical glazes and porous clay.
