Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Transparent washes and dry-brush work: typical mid-19th-century English watercolour practice.
Costume of the figures: rural working dress of the mid-Victorian period.
Gentle toning across the paper: natural oxidisation from long exposure to light.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian 19th Century British School wall art depicts an autumnal river landscape in the manner of David Cox, showing a hunter and his dog on a riverside path alongside a woman with a basket. The watercolour on paper presents muted brown and blue tones, set beneath glass within a cloth mount and a moulded gilt wood frame with ripple detailing along the outer edge. The frame displays water staining along the bottom edge, adding visible character to the piece. Measuring 54 cm x 65 cm overall including the frame, with the watercolour itself measuring 32 cm x 44 cm, this English country house artwork is suited for placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway. The traditional rural subject matter complements classic interior settings, bringing historical landscape charm to domestic wall spaces.

FAQs

19th-century British watercolour landscapes typically feature naturalistic outdoor compositions, atmospheric perspective, and delicate washes depicting rural life, rivers, and countryside views.

Watercolour paintings from this period were created using water-soluble pigments on thick rag paper, often mounted with wash-lines and framed in carved gilt wood or plaster frames.

Authentic period watercolours show natural paper aging, historic mount styling, hand-drawn wash lines, and subtle brushwork standard to 19th-century pigments.

Position the framed artwork above a mantelpiece, side table, or within a gallery wall to introduce historic character and tonal depth into contemporary or traditional schemes.

Display watercolour art away from direct sunlight and moisture, use UV-protective glass, and ensure acid-free backing materials to prevent foxing and colour fading.
