Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Incised signature E. Jespers along the shoulder: cut into the wax model before casting.
Oval foundry stamp on the lower back: produced by an established commercial workshop.
Patina rubbed through to lighter bronze on the high points: decades of handling.
Pale green oxidisation gathered in the deep recesses: natural ageing of the metal.
Symbolist hooded subject with textured drapery: late nineteenth-century Belgian sculpture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late 19th-century bronze bust by the Belgian sculptor Emile Louis Jespers depicts a medieval woman in peasant dress with a serious facial expression. Created around 1890 in the Gothic Revival style, the piece portrays a head and shoulders length portrait of a female figure wearing a fitted hooded headdress or cowl that drapes over her shoulders. The sculpture has a dark brown patinated finish and a textured casting with visible tool marks on the surface of the metal. The signature of the artist is present alongside a foundry stamp from Meridian London Bronze. Measuring 30 cm high and 32 cm wide, this compact portrait sculpture sits securely on a mantelpiece, a console table, or a bookshelf in a living room, hallway, or study.

FAQs

Gothic Revival bronze busts from the late 19th century frequently depict historical or medieval figures, focusing on dramatic expressions, draped garments, and detailed headwear inspired by earlier European eras.

Sculptures from this era were primarily created using the lost-wax or sand casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details and applying chemical patinas to achieve specific colouration.

Authentic period bronzes generally exhibit natural patination wear, precise foundry marks or artist signatures cast directly into the metal, and crisp detail work consistent with hand-finishing techniques of the period.

Position a bronze bust as a focal accent on a minimalist console table, mantelpiece, or within a tailored bookcase to introduce texture, historical character, and contrast to contemporary surroundings.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth or soft brush, and occasionally apply a light coat of neutral microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from ambient moisture and handling oxidisation.
