This original vintage oil painting on canvas dates from 1960 and is created in the Expressionist style after the manner of Marc Chagall. The multi-colour figurative work depicts an elderly archbishop in white robes with a green jewel fastening, holding a pastoral staff, standing alongside several geese against an architectural backdrop featuring towers under a dramatic sky. The thick impasto brushwork builds texture across the scene, and an indistinct signature appears in the lower-right corner. The work is mounted within a conforming gilt moulded wood frame. Measuring 60.4 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep, the framed painting is suited for display in a living room, hallway, or above a sideboard in a maximalist wonderland interior. Both the canvas and the frame remain in exceptional original condition.

Mid-Century Surrealism and Expressionism frequently incorporated dreamlike symbolism, narrative themes, and bold textural brushwork. Artists often drew inspiration from folkloric tales, religious imagery, and classical mythology to create evocative visual compositions.

Traditional vintage paintings feature stretched linen or cotton canvas, or wooden panels, primed with gesso before oil paints are applied. Frame constructions typically feature carved timber, often finished with gold leaf, gilt paint, or gesso embellishments.

Authentic mid-century oil paintings display characteristic signs of age, such as natural craquelure in the paint layer, darkening of varnish, and hand-stretched canvas keys on wooden stretcher bars. Examining the rear of the frame for period hardware or gallery labels also provides authentication clues.

Narrative art pieces function effectively as focal points above sideboards, consoles, or mantelpieces in modern spaces. Pair the warm gilded tones of the frame with neutral backdrop walls or rich timber furniture to highlight the artworks colour palette.

Dust the surface lightly using a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or microfibre cloths. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators to prevent paint cracking and canvas distortion.
